Research officer post available (currently 2 years but funding agreed on an ongoing basis, subject to annual reviews) to work for the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS).
The Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS) was created in 2019 to increase the research capacity of Sport Wales in collaboration with Universities across Wales, with the aim of promoting the health benefits associated with sport, physical activity and recreation. The Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport is a two-way partnership between Sport Wales and Wales’s leading academic health, sport and exercise scientists based across all Universities in Wales (Swansea University, University of South Wales, Bangor University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Aberystwyth University, Wrexham Glyndŵr, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Cardiff University). This partnership also engages key stakeholders who are pivotal to the generation of projects and direction of WIPAHS.
This is an exciting and dynamic senior role within the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS) to support its long term delivery, sustainability and income generation and associated work. It will build upon the WIPAHS brand and reputation to explore wider philanthropic and other external sources of funding, nationally and internationally.
The role will involve the development and delivery of a range of major commissioned projects and support work, consistent with the mission and vision of WIPAHS to use the transformative power of physical activity and sport to promote the Nation’s health and wellbeing. A primary element of this role will be ensuring strong collaborative links are maintained and extended between the eight Higher Education Institutes across Wales and stakeholder groups. The post will help create new ideas and collaborative opportunities to ensure physical activity and sport are integrated within future policies and that those policies are actioned and evaluated. Given the focus of WIPAHS on the translation of research into policy and practice, there is significant potential for demonstrable impact at the individual, societal and environmental levels. This senior role will include identifying and negotiating opportunities as well as managing and contributing expertise to deliver the work to a high standard in order to challenge, change and champion WIPAHS and the translation of its work to policy and practice. Central to the achievement of this will be the dissemination of the findings to diverse audiences.
The candidate should hold a PhD in a relevant subject area or appropriate level of experience, have demonstrable knowledge of physical activity, health and/or sport promotion and knowledge of relevant policies and their development and implementation. Furthermore, the candidate should have experience managing multi- disciplinary and -institution projects and ensuring their successful delivery and dissemination. It is desirable but not essential that the candidate is able to communicate in Welsh.
